Who wants The Donald to be our president?

After teasing that he might run for president during five previous elections, Donald Trump finally said that this time he’s doing it. On Tuesday, he announced that he will run for the Republican nomination. “I am officially running for president of the United States,” he declared. And he promised, “We are going to make our country great again.”

The real-estate magnate and TV celebrity said he would self-finance his campaign and boasted that he could do it because “I’m really rich.” He claimed his net worth is $8.7 billion – more than double the $4.1 billion Forbes magazine has estimated. That makes him the most successful person to ever seek the White House, he said. “I’m not doing that to brag,” he added.

Really, Donald?

The announcement took place at Trump Tower, the skyscraper in New York City that is just one of many buildings around the world that bears his name. Trump wasted no time in denouncing his opponents, saying that American politicians are stupid and incompetent losers.

Trump said that former Florida governor Jeb Bush could never win the election because of his support of Common Core national educational standards and his advocacy of a path to legal status for immigrants who are in this country illegally. “How the hell can you vote for this guy?” Trump asked. “You just can’t do it.”

Trump said that he would “build a great, great wall” on our border with Mexico and would require Mexico to pay for it. He also promised to “get tough” on Islamic State militants, repeal the Affordable Care Act, and stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

He also said he was the best candidate to make things better in this country. “Sadly, the American dream is dead,” he declared. “But if I get elected president, I will bring it back bigger and better and stronger than ever before, and we will make America great again.”

Trump vowed to rebuild the country’s infrastructure and create millions of new jobs. “I will be the greatest jobs president God ever created,” he promised. He also said that unemployment in the U.S. has soared under Barack Obama and is now over 20 percent – more than three times higher than government claims. “Don’t believe the 5.6 percent [figure],” he said. “Don’t believe it.”

Even before Trump finished his 45-minute speech, the Democratic National Committee issued a sarcastic statement welcoming his candidacy. “He adds some much-needed seriousness that has previously been lacking from the GOP field,” spokeswoman Holly Shulman said, “and we look forward to hearing more about his ideas for the nation.”

Sure they do.

Trump is scoring high enough in the polls to be included in the first two Republican presidential debates. Both Fox News, which hosts the first debate in August, and CNN, which hosts the one in September, have said they would limit participation to the top 10 candidates in a group of national polls.

So it looks like the most politically incorrect candidate in the race will be standing behind a podium when the debates begin. Trump will probably have the most negatives of the 10 candidates. A Quinnipiac poll in March said that 51 percent of voters would definitely not vote for The Donald.

I think Eric Erickson, the editor of the Red State political blog, got it right when he said, “Donald Trump is the disrespectful candidate for people who disrespect the process. He’ll be rude. He’ll be loud. He’ll be confrontational.” And then he added, “And he won’t get the nomination.”

No, he won’t. The traits Erickson cited aren’t what the public wants in a president. But Trump will sure liven things up in the campaign.

The gloves are coming off, folks. And that’s probably a good thing.

Until next time, keep some powder dry.
