Michael Oren, the former Israeli ambassador to the United States, said in an interview about his new book, “Ally: My Journey Across the American-Israeli Divide,” the Obama administration made several mistakes with its public relations with the Jewish nation – but some were actually intentional.
“This book comes out now for a reason,” he said on a “Morning Joe” interview on MSNBC. “I wanted this book to come out now precisely because of the Iranian issue because the essence of trust is what this is all about.”
He then spoke of mistakes Israel made in its dealings with the United States – namely, announcing a new settlement in disputed territory on the cusp of Vice President Joe Biden’s trip to the region in 2010, the Hill reported. But such errors weren’t intentional, Oren said.
By comparison, many of the mistakes the United States made with Israeli were intentional, he said, citing his book research.
“What I distinguished, and is an important distinction, are mistakes that are made honestly, perhaps sometimes unintelligently and prudently, and mistakes that are made as a matter of policy,” Oren said, the Hill reported.
He went on: “The president said openly that he was going to put daylight between Israel and the United States. Which means, in the past, where we had disagreements with Clinton, with Bush, we tended to try to keep them behind closed doors. These were put out front.”
Oren said the burgeoning deal with Iran is creating a wide chasm between Israel and the United States, and leaders ought to stop framing the discussions as a “binary notion” that doesn’t require Iran to change “its behavior,” he said.
“If I were an Iranian negotiator, I wouldn’t sign it either because the Iranians have learned over the years that the longer the wait, the better the deal they get,” he said.
