Rural media outlets are mounting a campaign to be heard over the blaring opinions of big city news in coverage of the 2016 presidential contest.
Rural America can make or break a presidential campaign. That’s why Mitt Romney wanted so badly to be seen as an avid varmint hunter, why Dubya spent so much time clearing brush down in Crawford and why Hillary Clinton keeps trying and failing to come off as folksy. After all, largely rural Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina are the first in the nation to choose presidential nominees in each presidential election.
Still, coverage of the candidates in national political campaigns is almost always dominated by big city media.
Nashville-based RFD-TV, with the help of SiriusXM and cable provider Mediacom, hope to change that in the 2016 race with coverage of the candidates and their views on rural America.
The network will begin airing a series of live, one-hour programs focusing on the 2016 candidates and their views on rural issues for its nearly 50 million viewers beginning in July. In addition, SiriusXM will simulcast each on the programs on a channel dubbed Rural Radio.
“For the first time candidates will be able to communicate with Americans on a national network devoted exclusively to issues that are most important to that audience,” added Gary Kanofsky, chief content officer of RFD-TV News. “All of America will be tuned in as these issues resonate outside of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. By focusing on rural and agriculture topics for the entire hour, each candidate will have ample time to address a wide variety of subjects typically not covered on a national network.”
Candidates interviewed for the programs will face a host of questions often untouched in mainstream interviews, according to RFD-TV.
“Questions will be solicited from grain, livestock, poultry, fruit, vegetable, and fiber producers, rural educators, FFA, and 4-H members, along with officials from small towns who have unique concerns about rural development, healthcare, and other challenges facing America’s rural communities,” the network said on its website.
And while rural America is often associated with right-leaning politics, Rural Media Group founder Patrick Gottsch said there will be no room for bias in the RFD-TV coverage.
“We cannot be viewed as Republican or Democrat. Liberal or Conservative. Our one and only goal is to represent the interests of rural America. All of rural America,” he said. “Every candidate will be extended an invitation, and all viewpoints are welcome. I believe that, if given all the facts in a constructive format, RFD-TV’s audience is smart enough to make up their own minds.”
