Just as MTV isn’t really about music television and CMT features programming of dubious connection to country music, The Weather Channel (TWC) has been straying farther and farther from pure weather information in recent years.
Now the cable mainstay is going overtly political with a new series aimed at persuading viewers of the urgency of acting to stop climate change.
TWC is billing Climate 25, its new advocacy program, as “a digital media and television experience featuring interviews with the world’s 25 most compelling voices on one of the most pressing issues of our time — the impact of climate disruption on human security.”
Among the 25 “voices” there’s no Bill Nye or Al Gore. Instead, TWC aims to paste together a group whose backgrounds are more ideologically diverse than what the public may have come to expect from the loudest complainers. In addition to researchers, there’re also military officers, intelligence officials and economists.
Oh, yeah — there’s also a Republican or two. The RepublicEn blog — a site where Republicans can embrace the GOP platform while also embracing an activist climate agenda — touts the appearance of former South Carolina Congressman (and RepublicEn co-founder) Bob Inglis on the Climate 25 list. His segment is featured here.
TWC’s Neil Katz explained the channel’s emboldened political stance on the Climate 25 site as a reflection of the “wide consensus” among “those who study the climate.”
“There are only a few issues more contentious than climate change in American political life. But while the climate change debate rages in some quarters, in others, most notably among those who study the climate, there is wide consensus,” he asserts. “It’s for this reason that The Weather Channel has adopted a position on climate change that can generally be summed up as follows: we report the science, and the science consistently says climate change is real, humans are causing it, and we must prepare for its effects.
“… All of the interview subjects of Climate 25 are speaking based on the fact that climate change is happening.”
