Bergdahl teammates asked to stay quiet about desertion

(Townhall) According to a new report from Fox News’ Catherine Herridge, teammates of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements years ago after discussing his desertion with the Joint Chiefs Chairman in Afghanistan.

According to Herridge’s reporting and General Bob Scales, asking soldiers to sign non-disclosure agreements is unprecedented.

“I can’t remember, ever, have an enlisted soldier sign a non-disclosure agreement for anything. This is completely unprecedented,” Scales said. “These non-disclosure agreements have got nothing to do with military justice.”

Hillary-tied think tank bashes Obama’s ISIS strategy

(Washington Times) A think tank with ties to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton issued strong criticisms Thursday of the Obama administration’s strategy to combat the Islamic State, with analysts writing that the U.S. is “failing” and needs to change course.

Two former Obama national security aides broke with the president by urging the deployment of American ground troops to directly help the disheveled Iraqi army. One used the word “failing” to describe how the administration is arming the Baghdad military.

Analysis suggests Clinton presidency would be costly for taxpayers

President Hillary Clinton could be bad news for American taxpayers, according to a new analysis of her attempts to spend taxpayer money as a Democratic New York senator from 2001 to 2009.

The analysis, out from the National Taxpayer Union Foundation, seeks to look beyond Clinton’s most recent government endeavors to better understand what her candidacy could mean for the nation’s fiscal future.

“Hillary Clinton’s campaign website has no policy items outlined yet, and her term as Secretary of State has been the focal point of scrutiny, but her past in the Senate offers the best insight into her fiscal priorities,” NTUF’s Douglas Kellogg wrote on the organization’s website.

The taxpayer watchdog found that Clinton attempted to spend an average of $226 billion annually as a lawmaker. Meanwhile, she sought just $254 million in average annual spending cuts.

“On average, for each dollar to reduce spending, Clinton proposed $892 in new spending in each Congress,” NTUF found.

In total, Clinton averaged 201 bills each year that would create significant spending increases compared to an average of just 3 bills that would cut spending.

“In the 107^th Congress, Senator Clinton had no savings proposals on her legislative agenda,” the NTUF report noted. “The most she sponsored was five in the 109^th Congress for a total reduction of $381 million.”

Here are some other findings from the NTUF report:

• In each Congress, Senator Clinton proposed far more new spending increases than decreases. On average, she supported $226.4 billion in new spending each year and $254 million in savings, for a net average of $226.1 billion in annual spending increase.
• With the exception of the 107^thCongress, Senator Clinton tended to support a larger net agenda to increase spending than the average Democrat Senator.
• The most expensive bill she backed was S. 448 (108th Congress), the Leave No Child Behind Act of 2003, an omnibus bill pertaining to federal programs for children, including increases in spending on education, health care, paid leave, and child care. Annualized cost of $105.4 billion.
• Clinton also sponsored S. 280 (110th Congress), the Climate Stewardship and Innovation Act of 2007, to establish a cap and trade system. Annualized cost of $53.3 billion.
• By far the largest savings proposal she supported was S 2260 (109th Congress), the Patients Before Profits Act of 2006, to repeal the Medicare Advantage Stabilization Fund. Annualized savings of $467 million.

Economy shrinks in Q1 of 2015

The U.S. economy contracted in the first quarter of 2015, revised gross domestic product figures reveal.

The .7 percent contraction comes in the wake of an original estimate that claimed first-quarter GDP had expanded by .2 percent. But the May revision of first-quarter growth indicates an economy that, in a technical sense, is in recession.

From a statement released by the Department of Commerce:

Real gross domestic product — the value of the production of goods and services in the United States, adjusted for price changes — decreased at an annual rate of 0.7 percent in the first quarter of 2015, according to the “second” estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth quarter, real GDP increased 2.2 percent.

The GDP estimate released today [Friday, May 29] is based on more complete source data than were available for the “advance” estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, real GDP increased 0.2 percent. With the second estimate for the first quarter, imports increased more and private inventory investment increased less than previously estimated (for more information, see “Revisions” on page 3).

While Commerce cites an imports/export imbalance, the Obama administration also blamed bad winter weather and Americans’ increased propensity to hold onto their money. White House economist Jason Furman instead pointed to a “combination of personal consumption and fixed investment” as a better indicator of the state of the economy’s true health.

“The first-quarter slowdown was the result of harsh winter weather, tepid foreign demand, and consumers saving the windfall from lower oil prices,” Furman wrote. “The combination of personal consumption and fixed investment, the most stable components of GDP, has grown 3.4 percent over the past four quarters. This solid long-term economic trend complements the robust pace of job growth and unemployment reduction over the last year.”
